Derek is one of Australia’s most sought after Musical Theatre Actors. His credits also include concerts, cabaret and television.
Following title roles in Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hans Christian
Andersen, he was chosen by the late Sir Robert Helpmann to play the lead role in the World Premiere of the musical
Aloha in Hawaii.
Derek spent three years in England in the hit musical 42nd Street at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Other credits whilst in London included
Matador, A Tribute to Noel Coward and the 1987 Royal Variety
Performance. Returning to New Zealand, he played the lead in a succession of productions including
Some Like it Hot, Chess and Side by Side by Sondheim.
Since moving to Australia he has toured in productions of A Swell
Party, Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and Me and My Girl for which he won the coveted Green Room Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Other theatre credits include lead roles in
Here Comes Showtime, She Loves Me, Follies in
Concert, Closer Than Ever, Buskers & Angels, Chess,
Silhouette, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,
The Wizard of Oz, Certified Male, Titanic - The
Musical, Pippin and most recently created the role of ‘Patsy’ in
Monty Python’s Spamalot for which he received another Green Room Award Nomination.
When not working in Theatre, he regularly performs his Mo Award Nominated one man show in Cabaret and Cruise Ships.
